As the Mercury Rises, so does the Demand for Water!

As we try to keep our yards and gardens alive during these hot and dry summer days, the system wide demand for water tends to increase dramatically.  In fact, the average daily demand for water is typically 3-4 times as high as the demand for water in winter months.

For most of the year, AMUD is able to satisfy system demands with groundwater supplies.  However as needs increase, we must supplement with water from the SWATS Plant.  This plant is a surface water treatment facility, operated by the Brazos River Authority (BRA), which utilizes reverse osmosis technology to treat water from Lake Granbury.

Recently expanded, this plant provides AMUD with over half of our total water production capability.  Unfortunately, the BRA is currently experiencing some operational difficulties with the expanded facility.  They are working diligently to remedy the problems, however in the meantime we are receiving water of lower quality than the plant is designed to produce (i.e.: elevated salt content).

While water from SWATS does not present a health risk, we are dealing with a healthy dose of taste and odor problems in areas of the District where SWATS water is prevalent.

AMUD is sensitive to your concerns and will work with the BRA to ensure that in future years you will be provided year round with the high quality water you expect and deserve.
