  • DOUBLE CHECK VALVES

The Double Check Valve assembly is an approved device for most irrigation systems.  The Double Check Valve assembly is very accessible and can be obtained at most hardware stores, with the plumbing supplies or irrigation supplies.  Home Depot, Sutherlands or Lowes should stock a Double Check Valve Assembly.

The Double Check Valve Assembly will consist of a solid brass body approximately 7 to 9 inches long.  It will contain two internal spring loaded check valves with two turn-off valves, one at each end.  It will also have four test cocks on the side of the valve for testing purposes.

One can ask for different models of the Double Check Valve assembly.  There are several to choose from, an example of a few approved assemblies would be the Febco 805y, Conbraco 401azt, Watts 007 or the Wilkins 950xl or xlt.

How to install your Double Check Valve

    • The Double Check Valve must be installed prior to the irrigation system and after the water meter.  It is to be 12 inches below grade.
    • The Double Check Valve must have a cover to protect if from freezing.
    • The Double Check Valve is not to be located in a low lying area where drainage could be a problem.
    • The box must leave approximately 2 to 3 inches on each side of the Double Check Valve for testing purposes.
    • The box should have a minimum of 12 inches clearance under the Double Check Valve with gravel.

Where to install your Double Check Valve

    • The best place for the Double Check Valve is approximately 1 to 2 feet from your meter box.  Other locations may be required by local authority.
    • It is required to install a tee  with a ball valve before you install your Double Check Valve, to keep continuous water to the residence during a leak or mechanical break down of the sprinkler system.

    Other Considerations

    • Allow adequate space for testing and maintenance.
    • Adequate drainage should be provided
    • Allow adequate room from shut off valve rotation
    • Allow space for attaching fittings and hoses to test cocks.
    • Protect from freezing.
    • BACKFLOW AND CONNECTIONS TO THE MAIN WATERLINE CANNOT BE CLOSED UNTIL INSPECTED BY AMUD PERSONNEL.
    • ARRANGEMENTS FOR COORDINATION OF THESE INSPECTIONS MUST BE MADE WITH A 24 HOUR NOTICE GIVEN TO AMUD.

  • Send email to the WEB MANAGER with questions or comments about this web site.
